Gionee eLife E3-Slim Beauty-Review



Gionee has launched the Gionee Elife E3 smartphone in the Indian Market.The Elife E3 is the new flagship Android smartphone from Gionee. It has a sleek body along with the latest processor and Android OS. Device is really great in terms of specs, looks, build, design and performance. Here I am going to evaluate in the light of hands on experience .So here we go:







Form and Feel Factor
Its quite slim, mere 7.9 mm thick and weight 110 grams appx.It comes in evergreen Black, Metallic Blue and Pink color options giving it a unisex label. Gionee is focusing a lot on the color factor to the extent that the company has bundled a transparent protective cover with the device which strengthens the device in order to keep the color quotient untouched. Bonus point is this that even the protective cover is also sleek. Even with the protective cover on, the phone doesn't feel bulky or thick.It has a very neat and clean finish which can be attributed to absence of hardware keys on the front. The It has three capacitive touch sensitive keys. The back panel of the device is having a glossy finish but the color options will make sure that minor scratches get ignored very easily. The placement of the power/standby key on the same side makes it easy to use and user friendly.Build quality of the device is superb. It's sturdy bundled snap-on-covers add a lot of additional protection as well.

Display
Its possesses 4.7 inch True HD, 720p display with IPS technology. The display works great and has great contrast. Color vibrancy is also so good. The native resolution supported is 1280 x 720 pixels at 4.7 inches which makes it a great for viewing HD movies and playing HD games. No pixelation effect was seen as such.

Processor and hardware
Performance of Gionee Elife E3 is rocking. It has Mediatek MT6589 chipset that includes a 1.2GHz quad core processor. GPU is Ultra low power PowerVR SGX 544MP graphic processor. The optimisation has been done nicely which makes it for heavy games to work freely on the device.

It features a 1GB of RAM along with 16GB of internal storage. Micro SD card slot is also there to enhance the storage upto 32 GB.

Experiencing multitasking on this smart phone is like a breeze. Credit goes to its 1 GB RAM and a quad core processor.

Operating System
It comes preloaded with latest Google Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 operating system. Along with 1GB RAM, it performs tasksat awesome speeds with superb fluidity.It uses Gionee's own developed user interface which is really very user friendly and easy to use. Home screens can be added and reduced in number to accommodate more stuff. Lock screens get a multi windows interface that provides a quick access to apps and utilities.

Its compatible with most of applications and work easily and flawlessly on this smartphone.

In nut shell, I can say that experience of device is very good. OTA updates capability adds more to the charm of this sleek and robust beauty.

Performance and usage
I have tested a lot of applications and tried to stress it beyond limits, but no hanging or freezing problem or jerky behavior was encountered. The 4.7 inch display is a major plus point of this device even the touch sensitivity of the device is very accurate and all the gestures are very accurately registered and translated by the device.

In terms of Antutu benchmark the Gionee Elife E3 offered 13247 marks putting it above the Google Nexus 7 which is a quad core device as well and the Samsung galaxy Note N7000. While in comparison with the Micromax Canvas HD that has almost similar hardware specifications the Gionee Elife E3 has marginal but a certain edge as it offers better overall scores but with a somewhat  smaller display at same resolution.

The call performance of this device is also another major plus point for the device. The calls are received and made without any issue. The earpiece and loudspeaker volume is good and the microphone also makes sure the receiver gets to hear every world loud and clear. The loudspeaker here needs a special mention as in a slim device the loudspeakers generally go faint but not on the Gionee Elife E3.

Camera and multimedia
It is having 8 MP rear camera (Auto Focus) along with 2MP front HD camera (Fixed Focus). Results are really better than other phones in simillar segment. The camera has zero lag shutter and a BIS (Backside illuminated sensor). BIS Sensor boosts up the colors and details in low light conditions. Full HD 1080p video recording @ 30 FPS is more than enough.

Both outdoor and indoor image performance rocks. LED flash comes in to play wherever needed and performs far better than other phones in same segment..

On multimedia front this device features support for all generic android formats. There is also stereo FM included which also supports HD recording and automatic signal boost feature for low signal areas.

In the above pic at right hand side is the headphone provided with this phone. Looks stylish and unique like the phone. This pic itself is clicked by E3 in low light w/o flash.

Battery
1800 mAh Battery may sound low at first instance but backup is one of the major plus points for the Gionee Elife E3. 1850 mAh is quiet good for 4.7 inch display. It lasts for 1 to 2 full days of usage between charges.

The device manages power usage quite brilliantly and offers superior performance on demand. So it offers a decent battery life.

Nutshell
The handset seems to be well built and in looks and build quality follows Nokia style. The handset comes with a rather very good 4.7-inch IPS HD display. When it comes to internal storage the handset comes with an impressive 16 GB on board memory. The handset comes with an impressive 8 mega pixel rear camera with auto focus besides a front facing 2 megapixel camera for video chatting.

The handset is going to be a big threat to not just Samsung’s Galaxy Grand that comes with lower specifications than Gionee’s E3. But the main victim may be an Indian company Micromax whose highest selling A116 Canvas HD comes for almost the same price. With better specs, E3 will beat other handsets from other Indian smartphone vendors with rather ease besides Micromax’s A116.

Gionee Elife E3 with the price of Rs 14,999 offers features and functionality in a sleek and slim profile. the only problem one may think is that of Gionee being a new brand in India.

At present, as per me, Gionee Elife E3 offers a very good package. The price is also lucrative. Performance is good beyond any doubt and the battery life is also very impressive (even though I didn't expect the same) . I personally love this phone and think that its a best available "Money + Performance" preposition right now.

UPDATE (GOOD NEWS)
Gionee has released first OTA update for E3 eLife dt 19.06.13

Its 165.25MB in size. This blog is first to disseminate this info :)
In this update Android version remains the same but some apps and games has been added. They are:

Du Battery SAVER
Gionee XENDER
Little Big City
Wonder Zoo
Texas Poker
One more theme added

This is what is included in the update. But there may be some other performance enhancers included as the size of update is 165.25 MB. I'll post them as soon as I come across them. You guys also comment here the differences after this update. Cheers :)

    Dear, this device is really awesome and has impressed me a lot. Its touch is just magnificent. And there is nothing wrong in going with Gionee. Its the top second company in China itself. And important to mention here that they are manufacturers of mobile phones with full fledge r&d setup. They don't just stamp the phone manufactured by another company (like Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, etc) This phone is their starting range of premium phones. Right now i m typing from same mobile.

      To be honest I haven't tried above said games but tried Real-racing 3. And doesn't seems to be any sort of under performance there.

    What is the battery backup of this mobile?
    Can you state in terms of 2g/3g talktime, Total Web Browsing time using 3g/Wifi, Music Playback time, Video Playback time?
    how much is also the game playback time approximately??

      With screen at 50% brightness, WiFi, continue usage gave about 4.5 hours of usage time.

      With 2 hours each of talk, video, YouTube and music, it gave around 6 hours.

      Moderate user gets around 8-9 hours.

      You can use “Battery saving mode” included in the OS to save battery life. Its very good app provided as default.

      Friends, also I would like to tell you the fact that Android OS is always power hungry. It doesn't matters if you pick small basic phone like Galaxy pocket or Big screen like Gionee E3 or even bigger screen like Grand. I have used all these phones. They all give average backup of one day with moderate usage. So you should worry only if battery performance is exceptionally poor. Avreage battery life should always be appreciated. Android phones doesn't vary much on battery backup.

      3G option is on micro sim i.e Slot 1
      I remain on WiFi round the clock. Haven't checked 3G on either slot.

      Fransis, I Purchased GiONEE E3 5days ago.... So 3G is the issue.... im using Aircel 3G. But Not Getting Network When 3G Enabled. otherwise 2G Working Good.! If you find the Solution for me that would be Grateful..!!!

      3g working on both sim . just turn on 3g in settings data network. Those who don't have 3 g range , change from gsm/wcdma option to wcdma only . phone is just awesome , enjoy friends .....

      Anmol, never go with the opinions of those who have never touched/used the phones. Camera is good in its category. I havent faced any issue with the games i have played so far. But regarding 3g I cant say anything as i never use it.

      Here i would like to mention one thing also. The touch of the phone is very delicate as compared to samsung phones. A little bit pressure can damage it without any good reason. Thats the only negative aspect we have found after disassembling the mobile. Otherwise its d best in its class.

      One more thing, i would like to request all the users of E3 to post here their feedbacks so that novice fellows may be benefited.

      As I'm using this e3 since 7 months .I've never faced any problems like low performance n struck. But as concerned to battery backup. Its little low as it gives 10 hours for a normal user..and the only problem i faced is 3g net .as sometimes it doesn't connect. Plzz say is micro Sim supports 3g?

      3G is supported on both sim slots. Nothing to worry about that. Regarding connectivity it depends on service provider. Battery discharge rate is average, just like any other android smartphone with 4.7" screen..

      About after-sales you need NOT to worry at all provided the service center is there nearby your location. As already said, we have tested their after sales part very thoroughly. Their offices are not hifi but performance wise they are equivalent to samsung and others. We had tested them by ordering display and touch. On fourth day we got the full furnished phone in our hand. Same duration is taken by samsung and others for such parts.

      Regarding canvas HD versus E3, E3 is far ahead in overall appeal. And regarding xolo play, its also a good phone but their customer care unit is not upto mark. Lava phones are treated on the spot, but Lava's subsidiary Xolo's phones are packed and couriered to their head office for treatment. This is my experience and information with me. May be possible that their customer care is more efficient at your place.

      I have stated the facts only and not favoring E3 in any manner. I always try to be unbiased as every individual has own tastes and preferences. Don't go for any phone (even E3) blindly. Do little bit research and interrogate well within your region and then take final purchase decision. All the best.

      Dear Chetan. I have downloaded the game and data. But sorry to say that it is not getting loaded. I don't know why. I think i am skipping something somewhere or there is something wrong with the data files. So I couldn't test Asphalt7. By the way Real racing 3 is running buttery smooth.

      Any other user who has tested Asphalt7 kindly post here reviews about Asphalt7. I'll be thankful to her/him.

    1.Even though higher mAh battery may seem to work well, but its not advisable to do so. Because inner circuits and components are designed to operate on fixed amperes and voltage. Higher mAh battery can ruin the device.

    gl to sd app from playstore its free if u wanna play games create a date name folder on external …. And put the game files on external and… Go to app gl to sd and add the game app and mount it …. It have mount option there should be .. Super user permission… And after …. That .. Your game will successfully work ..

    does this techique work ???

      Don't worry go ahead.
      Its touch is thinner than some samsung phones, but that does not mean that it will get damaged as such. It depends on the intensity and angle of impact. And more on luck lolz. Google for "S4 drop test video". In a single drop its was ruined like anything.

      Regarding customer care you need not to worry at all.

      Also I would like to tell my friends here that Display and Touch are two totally different units in any mobile phone. Damaged touch doesn't means that display is also damaged. Here is the room where the mobile phone technicians exploit the novice fellows by over-charging.

      Readings your reviews i have bought this phone.Phone is pretty good..however some issues--1)camera pictures get blurred when you zoom them..2)also free ram is about avg.40%, though still not many apps are installed in phone and i clear all running apps all time,still only 35-40% through NQsecurity widget..3) also as you confirmed, flash video doesnot support and dailymotion not worked in default UC browser.

      Can you provide some solutions on this points and name of useful apps( like antivirus,RAM cleaner,battery saver etc) u use to increase its productivity..would be very appreciative..Thanks in advance..

      1. Every mobile camera blurs for a moment when u try to focus it. After that it comes normal. As its camera is auto focus, image will come out without any blur.

      2. 40% free RAM is good enough dude. What more do you want?

      3. Regarding embedded videos on sites like dailymotion.com, I have re-confirmed it after reading your comment. Its really playing well in UC Browser. I have added screenshots at the end of the post just for you. Just have a look.

      Finally, have you OTA updated your phone? After that you would get Du Battery saver as well as many minor bugs fixed. No need for any RAM cleaner as its inbuilt by the name of App Manager. Regarding antivirus its also there inbuilt by the name of NQ Mobile Security. Its good antivirus.

      but in my UC browser dailymotion is not opening...perhaps my browser needs update..can i remove the pre installed browser and install latest UC browser for android from play store..
      Also in my set NQ mobile security( not useful as it want premium for updating),Du battery,weather apps,few games is preloaded without any OTA done..however gionee xender is not there..shall i need to update my phone..?

      No need to uninstall and reinstall any app. Just go to Google Play and update apps.

      Regarding NQ virus database update, do it when asked by NQ or get update manually whenever you desire. It updates in a fraction of second. No issue.

      Regarding OTA update, you do it whenever you are on wifi or 3G. No harm in doing that. Many bugs are fixed automatically.

      Being a latest product E5 is better if you see the specs enhancement worth additional 5K bucks. But if you are ready to shed off few bucks further, I would recommend E6. Thats another fabulous piece of art and technology from Gionee.If you wana go for other brands, then you can check Sony Xperia series. In samsung you can think of Quatro.       Rooting is nothing more than getting authorized to access and modify the system files which is otherwise not possible. Also many applications (e.g Firewall, etc) need the root access to your phone to work. If you are a tech savvy guy, you can also customize your phone to any extent. Unless and until you feel the need of rooting, its always advisable to avoid it, because after rooting probability of intrusion by third party apps increases and makes it more vulnerable to malicious activities. I strongly recommend "Not rooting your phone" for those who do serious jobs on mobile phone (like net-banking, online financial transactions).

    Actually i am about to buy this phone (most probably tomorrow) as i am astonished by its specs and pretty looks.
    But going thru the reviews i got scared after watching the one by igyaan.com.
    There they say that the phone hangs sumtyms out of nowhere and it doesnt wakes up again untill u do a battery pull out!
    I would lyk to ask to all gionee E3 users and @francis if this was the same case with you?
    I mean i dont want a phone which freezes up in middle of my some imp work.
    And if its true then i guess i'll buy lava iris pro 504Q as the next best alternative.

    I m very much impressed with review of gionee e3. I have purchased e3. I found it really worth. Now i heard about lenovo p780 with 8 gb rom and 4000mah battery.

    I would like to have your expert review video of the same. No mobile is offering dual sim, quad core processor, usb otg, 4000mah in rs. 18900/-.
    My requirements are dual sim, higher capacity processor, huge battery within 20000/-. Also guide me for any other alternative.

      I am waiting for a review unit from Gionee or some friend. Only after that I will be in position to say about much hyped E6. I had just experienced it for a while during its launch. Its form factor is appealing. Touch too is good. Can't say more right now. But one thing is for sure that the price tag of INR 22000 is not justified. It should be around 17K bucks after some days.

    I am using Gionee E3 and it is indeed value for money, best seller from Gionee..Everything is running fine till now. Thank you very much for such a informative review for users.
    One thing wanna ask, how to remove certain pre loaded apps like NQ security( which require premium amount for anti virus though lot of good free Anti virus are available in play store) and yahoo cricket etc. They really take much of space and i don't use them also.
    If you can help it will be fantastic. I dnt wanna root the phone to void my warranty..

      As you already know that its not feasible without rooting your device. So the only alternative is to disable unwanted apps via system settings->>apps. Also uncheck the " Show notifications" box. After this the desired app will never get loaded. Your phone will be like as if no such app is installed at all.

      Sourav I would like to suggest you to check the same in some another brand but on same internet connection. Only then you could conclude anything. Also the app may not work properly on 2G network. Try 3G or hi speed WiFi connection.

      Yes I also check the same version of Line messenger in Galaxy Grand,Gionee GPAD G1,Lava iris 501,Sony Xperia C,Gionee P2.This app work perfectly with those phones on same internet connection.I am using Airtel 2g data plan.But I also tried to use this apps with Airtel and Bsnl 3g plans and also with wifi too.But nothing happened.Every time this app shown this message "Connect Error".I also tried different version of Line,I tried older version as well as newest version.But no solution found.

      Sourav Dey, you are right. I also tested the above said app and got same results. But it used to work prior to E3 software update. It seems to be some sort of software conflict or compatibility issue. I am looking for the solution. But for the tine being you can report the same in the reviews in google play store. Or you can ask the developer via email also. I will revert back to you as soon as i get the key to this prob.

      yeah, i m having same issue. reported to near by service store n they updated software . but nothing changed . m too having same no internet connection/ connection error.
      my set has E3_102_V6318 software.
      also i noted some times it conflicts other upload data apps also. like online games shows "U r disconnected from server. please login again. " and speed test aps. like speed net by Ookla shows good download. while upload has 0 value n reports error as Network communication err.

      You need to hard reset your device now via stock recovery. It will bring your phone to default factory settings. Go To Stock Recovery by pressing VOL+ and POWER BUTTON together. Then select Wipe Data/Factory reset.
      Thats all.

    I've gone through the review you've provided. And through all the comments as well. And I think I've rarely ever seen a blogger replying to each and every comment and that too after so many months after posting. Being a blogger once, I think this is a great work you are doing.
    I too have a question regarding this mobile. Sites like eg:-NDTV gadgets are saying WIFI Direct is absent in this mobile in their specification of the mobile. I've been using this feature in my current HTC mobile to connect with my TV. Though Glenford here said wifi direct is present, am still confused as the Gionee site even not mentioning wifi direct, but the hotspot feature. Hope you or someone here can help me.

      Btw why r you using Samsung headphones? Haven't you got and tried the headphones in the box itself? Your cell's socket may be faulty if and only if the original headphone is creating any problem. But as u said screen blinking problem is also there, its better to see the service center. They will re-load the software.

    Hope you are doing good. This forum is very informative and do good for many users around the world. I recently bought my Gionee E3 and it stunned me with its slim look and awesome performance.

    However, i am facing an issue with my charging indicatior. The percentage of battery level does not show its exact value. It never decreases after long usage unless i reboot the handset. (For example it will be in 90% after 8 hours of usage and once i reboot the device it will come down all the way to 5%)

    Same issue while charging the phone too. Battery percentage does not getting increased after 2-3 hours of charging. (For example, it will be in 15% after charging for 2-3 hours unless i reboot the handset).

    Hope i am clear in explaining the my query. Any help from you or other users will be great.

    1. I bought this mobile a week back so it came with the OTA update.
    2. Initially i thought it may be an App issue and hence, uninstalled DU Battery saver and checked. Issue remains same.
    3. I have done the factory restore and still issue remains the same.

    Anyother option that i can try out before i hit the service centre?

    1) Please i am having issues with my Gionee E3. i recently noticed that i can no longer upload pictures from the gallery onto apps like instagram or blackberry messenger. Later, when i go to my gallery page, i see blank pictures with 'no thumbnail' written inside. The number of pictures are usually an equivalent of the number of times i have attempted to upload a new picture on my facebook, bbm or instagram profile page.

    2)Similarly, i can no longer save pictures sent to me from my friends who send through social media platforms like blackberry messenger, whatsaap etc.

    please help, im so unhappy.

      Try following steps:

      1.First of all check if the sufficient memory is available. May be possible your mobile memory gets exhausted. Also check memory storage option.

      2.Use inbuilt app "App Manager" to free up the extra load on the processor by clearing the cache, etc. You can also use "Clean Master" from google store

      3.Uninstall the latest installed app after which you are facing problem.

      4.Replace your SD Card.

      5.Otherwise factory reset your device.

      Follow the given steps:

      1. Install Mobileuncle MTK Tool from Google play

      2. Open Mobileuncle MTK Tool and select Engineer Mode

      3. Select Engineer Mode MTK

      4. Swap to Hardware Testing

      5. Select Audio

      6. Select Loudspeaker Mode

      7. Change Max Volume Value 128 to 145 and press set. You can set this value up to 160 but above 150 is not recommended as it may damage speaker.

      8. Exit Mobileuncle MTK Tool.

      Thats all.

    Francis, its been almost 8 months since i have used this fone, and just this morning i noticed 3 white dots on my screen, these dots are light brighter than my screen thats why these dots are noticeble.. Any help you do for this problem before bringing it to service center? TIA

      If they are not rectified after master reset then they are dead pixels. Go to service center soon as your device is under warranty.

    hi im using this phone from oct 2013 i purchased in sangeeta mobile store 3g supports on both sim just u have to try in network settings nd i played asphlat 3 it never lags i love this phone..very much i just cant be without this gionee is a good company but some stupids or reverting the name its china made china made but just i want to tell this phone is awesome nd u can buy this back covers in shopclues.com
    or u can give order to ur street retailer shop they'll find it in market
    honestly saying flashlight is not good enough but its chalta...and im uploading so many videos nd pictures in my facebook account from this phone never it lags
    im regular user of 3g i never disconnected the data on 3g its give 7 to 8 hours honestly telling..who ever want buy pls must go on

      Its not possible to decide among e3, moto g & xolo q1100 without knowing anyone's taste and preferences. As per my taste I would go for E3 due to its perfect size (4.7 inch), slim factor and finally internal memory (16GB). Only unfavorable point is that its still sticked to android version 4.2.1 while MotoG runs on 4.4.2 and Xolo1100 runs on 4.3.

    last week i upgraded my e3 to kitkat using the rom given by gionee, unfortunately i dont like it.. and for my opinion it is not as good as it used to be.. so iwant to downgrade it to jellybean.. do you know how to do it? thanks..

    Hello Fransis/Friends,

    My earpiece gone bad and it is difficult to get the original back as i have to go to the service centre-pay advance-place an order.
    Looking to get other brand earpieces. Will the below pieces would be compatible?

    1.Sennheiser cx 180
    2.Sony mdr-xb30ex

      Experiencing the same problem.. Tried several earphones.. But non works as better as the original earphone of e3 pls let me know if you find a good brand.
